Detention Bulletin: September 2014 – Defense for Children International

At the end of September, a total of 182 Palestinian children were imprisoned and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system, a decrease of 9.4 percent from August.The number of young children detained between the ages of 14 and 15 was 19. There were no children detained in the Israeli military court system under 14 years old.

New Military Order 1745


On September 10Military Order 1745 came into effect establishing specific requirements regarding audio-video recording and the language used during interrogations of Palestinian children by Israeli police in the occupied West Bank.Importantly, the utility of the new order is severely restricted because the provisions do not apply to a child suspected of committing a “security offense” such as throwing stones, which nearly all children arrested by Israeli forces and interrogated by Israeli police are alleged to have committed. Read more.

Palestinian child detained and used as human shield in Gaza


Israeli soldiers repeatedly used Ahmad Abu Raida, 17, as a human shield for five days when he was detained and held hostage during Israel’s ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Ahmad, from Khuza’a, near the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, was just 16 years old when he was taken from his family onJuly 23. He was forced at gunpoint to search for tunnels for five days, during which time he was interrogated, verbally and physically abused, and deprived of food and sleep. Read more.

Detention Figures
Each year approximately 500-700 Palestinian children, some as young as 12 years, are detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system. The most common charge is stone throwing.Currently, 83 Palestinian child prisoners are detained inside Israelin violation of Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
